CNMC Deputy Party Secretary Xu Shusen Meets with Chansa James, Chairman of Zambia National Union of Miners and Allied Workers

On September 9, 2014, Xu Shusen, Deputy Party Secretary of China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “CNMC”), met with Chansa James, Chairman of Zambia National Union of Miners and Allied Workers, who visited China for a learning purpose. Mr. Xu Shusen and Chairman Chansa James conducted a cordial and friendly talk in Beijing.

Prior to the talk, Chairman Chansa James first visited the exhibition hall of CNMC and listened with great interest to a report about the achievements made by CNMC through reform and development, especially the outstanding results from the “going out” strategy. When seeing photos of past presidents of Zambia attending the activities of CNMC and of the active fulfillment of social corporate responsibilities by both CNMC and CNMCL in Zambia, Chairman Chansa James has a sense of affinity to the company and was deeply moved. During the talk, Chairman Chansa James expressed his heartfelt admiration for the great achievements that CNMC has made with its “going out” strategy and appreciated the great contributions made by CNMC and CNMCL to the economic development and employment of local people in Zambia. He pointed out that Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, the founding president of Zambia, and Chairman Mao Zedong established the friendship between China and Zambia. Since then, the Sino-Zambian friendship has remained unshakable and become even firmer in spite of numerous tests. Especially when the world economic crisis in 2008, Luo Tao, General Manager of CNMC and Chairman of the Board of CNMCL, clearly committed “not to reducing investment, not to decreasing production, and not to dismissing a single employee”. The enterprises sponsored by CNMCL in Zambia firmly adhered to this commitment and stood together with the people in Zambia unswervingly. This act was highly acclaimed by the Zambian government and people. Although this trip to China was brief, Chairman Chansa James fully felt the rapid development of Chinese economy and the friendliness of the Chinese people. More impressed by the development and strength of CNMC, he hoped that CNMC and CNMCL will continue to increase the investment in Zambia and make new contributions to the social and economic development of Zambia.

Deputy Party Secretary Xu Shusen extended warm welcome to the coming of Chairman Chansa James and briefly introduced the investment and development, production and operation, and fulfillment of social responsibilities of CNMC and CNMCL in Zambia. He pointed out that CNMC and CNMCL will adhere to the principles of equality and mutual benefit and work with the Zambian government and people to constantly increase investment in Zambia, offer more local employment opportunities, improve the working and living environments of employees and their income levels, actively fulfill the social corporate responsibilities, and make positive contributions to the local social and economic development and improvements of people’s living standards. He hoped that Zambia National Union of Miners and Allied Workers can strengthen exchanges with CNMC as well as the labor unions of Chinese enterprises in Zambia to promote mutual understanding between Chinese and Zambian employees and make greater contributions to the deepening development of Sino-Zambian friendship.

Xu Ruiyong, Deputy General Manager of Zambia-China Economic & Trade Cooperation Zone Development Ltd., invested by CNMC, and comrades from relevant departments of the headquarters, were present at this event.
